I seem to have adopted an unfounded "holier than thou" attitude as far as my taste in music concerned. When did I, of all people, become too cool for
John Mayer? As I recall, my teenage infatuation with Mayer included underage visits to the local clubs with my dad whenever John rolled through Minneapolis, weekend fly-aways to Chicago with my mom to see him perform, and, even though it pains me much to admit any fangirl proclivities I used to harbor, a bedroom filled with Mayer posters and various magazine clippings. Where did I go wrong? Although, now as a 21 year old, I'm allowed to look back on some of my teenage tendencies with at least modicum of disdain...and oh, do I ever...but Mayer will not go down in my personal history as one of the aforementioned musical mistakes. As far as I'm concerned, he remains a brilliant musician with an endless arsenal of guitar heroics. However, I seem to have neglected his brilliance in the past few years. Of course, I have nearly his whole catalog and have played much of it to exhaustion. Yet, for reasons unbeknownst to me, my bygone enthusiasm for him has waned. Whether it's his celebrity shenanigans or the stadium and arena tours that simply don't hold a candle to the years' past smaller circuit shows, I just can't be sure. Fortunately, I've been somewhat re-enchanted with his theatrics upon receiving a review copy of his new CD/DVD "Where The Light Is: John Mayer Live in Los Angeles." I think I've turned a new leaf. In hindsight, maybe my mid-teens weren't completely marred by blind, musical imprudence. I mean, he did go from a seemingly endless cycle of coffeehouses in Athens, GA to unspeakable international success - I suppose I have been known to pick a few. The video for John's rendition of "Free Fallin" is posted below.
