and it rains, and rains.

photograph by Chris Strong

It's been raining for the past 2 days. I don't mind a bit of rain, but 2 straight days isn't just a bit. Good thing Minnesota summers are absolutely gorgeous, it makes up for stuff like this.

Whiskeytown - Sit and Listen to the Rain
*Buy Pneumonia, it's in my top 3 of all time.
Jettie - Aimie Rain
I Am Kloot - Morning Rain
Lo Mass Republic - Cold Rain
Remy Zero - Life In Rain

Struggle In The Hive

"It's alright. Take a chance."

I literally just got an e-mail about these guys, so don't expect an extended entry - I know very little about them. I do know this though - I dig them. And I like their label - Future Appletree. They've got some awesome stuff. Remember Grogshow from awhile back? Check the archives if you missed them, they're great. I bring to you the meandering, mid tempo, less than perfect indie rock tracks from Struggle in the Hive. It sounds like a cut, but indeed it isn't. I actually really enjoyed them.

Best of British

Klaxons seem to be getting a bit of press at the moment in the UK with an NME live review and some shouts in several other magazines. Difficult to pin down to one sound but eclectic if nothing else they remind me of Bloc Party or Art Brut with perhaps the haphazard attitude of Test-Icicles (R.I.P.). Maybe a case of image over substance but this track is definitly worth a try.

Klaxons - Gravity's Rainbow

-

The Fratellis sound may not be the most unique out their but they are still doing their thing very strongly. This Glaswegian outfit didn't impress me too much when I saw them early last year but rumour has it they kick ass live at the moment. You may hear certain bits of everything else going at the moment in a Monkeys/Libs type of vain but you are kidding yourself if you say you don't find the chorus to this track massively infectious.

The Fratellis - Creeping Up the Backstairs

-

Fields seem to me to be something like a British version of the sound between Death Cab For Cutie and Stars; not sure if you'll hear it but hopefully. Almost chilled out but with a slight apprehension its never quite comfortable. Really good music though and I could really see this band going somewhere. Anyone visiting this page who has enjoyed the Guillemots tracks should really take a look at this band.

Fields - If You Fail We All Fail
Fields - Song for the Fields

BONUS (and not British)

When this appeared the other week I had to get it straight away as this is the first of the solo effort from the lead singer of excellent Candian band, Stars. This is the first track to appear from lead singer Amy Milan's debut solo effort and I think it is absolutely sublime. If you can, have yourself wake up to this track.
Amy Milan - Skinny Boy

Voicst

"Dazzled kids looking at the high score. What is that we see?"

Let's go international again today, should we? I was pretty impressed with this band that appeared in my inbox last week. Voicst, all the way over in Amsterdam, appear to be making their way into the states. They've got some people backing them in NYC (who we all have to thank for the tracks) and it looks as though their debut U.S. release 11-11, from their very own Duurtlang Records will be out July 11th. I'm actually looking forward to this. I really was impressed with the songs. It's not too often that you get e-mails and are genuinely blown away by what you year. They've got their own blend of noisy pop/rock music that should be pretty easy for a lot of you to grab hold of. As always, the accented vocals are a plus as well.

Kiefer = stud

So, I saw The Sentinel last night. I actually really enjoyed it. First off, Kiefer Sutherland is a stud. After reading his Rolling Stone interview, I'm all eyes. I've got a new crush (I know, a new one everyday...). He is soooo bad ass. Seriously, check this out. Kiefer is sportin' cigs in both hands. I have never seen an episode of 24 in my life, but I think its necessary now that I invest in the first season. What do you think? And since I was just on the subject of cigarettes...I've also got a song for you. I myself am not too into cigarettes, but this track, and this band...i've been completely digging for the past few months now.

Hey Hey My My

"There's too much silence in your head."

...And Paris came knocking at our door. Some nice people over in France sent us this demo and asked us if we'd post a few tracks. I was all too happy. They're fun, jovial, and just a bit outlandish. Delicate, sometimes dreamy acoustic arrangements mixed with some uptempo pop tracks from a french indie-folk duo? That's hot. There no way that I was going to pass them up with a name like Hey Hey My My anyways. I completely dig it. As they've been described in their bio..."two heys, two mys, two guys named Julian and two guitars.." See what you think, they've got me all too interested.

Kid Theodore

"Won't you please invite me to stay for awhile? Because the ride home is long."

I haven't got much time today, but I still wanted to do a feature. Kid Theodore, another great band from the SLC area, creates quirky jazz-influenced indie rock songs. They're eccentric, but also very willing to slow it down with some melodious, lo-fi folk tracks. I chose one of both for you all to check out. I've since bought their cd, and just recieved it yesterday. I'm really digging it so far. If you like what you hear, their EP Goodnight...Goodnight is definitely something to "invest" in. The guys were all too happy to let me share some tracks with you, so enjoy.

I do music better than TV

Hugh Laurie, will you marry me? I have a ridiculously massive crush on Dr. House. Don't ask why, I'm not completely sure. Anyways, I've never ever posted about a TV show on here before. And don't expect me to do it often - or ever again. However, I wasn't too keen on getting a full music feature up today, so I settled, rather easily, for Hugh Laurie. House is on tonight; get into it. It's great. He's great. I unfortunately have to TIVO it, much to my dismay. They've grabbed hold of Massive Attack for their themesong. I'm sure many of you already know, but for those that don't - it's a really great track. Thought I'd share it with you.

Massive Attack - Teardrop

The Verdict

"Sing to me so I can sleep."

The sweet sounds of the Carolinas just got a whole lot cooler. The Verdict brings to you their blend of pop/rock music that still has some clear country undertones. On top of the that, the dual vocals of frontman Chandler Martin and guitarist Emily Moore are something to note as well. For lack of better words, the band just makes pleasant, down to earth music that brings me back to days gone by. They've got this real nostalgic quality about them, which is something that isn't the easiest thing to come across in some of the music that makes its way onto the scene today. Their debut disc, The Quick and the Dead, is definitely a pleaser. The band was all too happy to let me share some tracks with you. I choose three from the aformentioned disc as well as an unreleased acoustic track the band had available for download for a short time.

The Verdict - These Are Dreams
The Verdict - About You
The Verdict - Finally Figured You Out
The Verdict - December (acoustic)

The Diggs

"I can't afford to be wrong."

NYC is just too good to us. The Diggs made their way around the blogs awhile back, but I thought I'd reignite the spark. They bring to us old style, anthemic indie rock tunes. The guitar lines are intricate and complex, and the vocals are hushed and mellifluous. In fact, the vocals are so seeping with passion that vocalist Timothy Lannen sounds as though he's about to break at any moment. Perhaps I'm being a bit dramatic, but I'm a sucker for vocal vulnerability. Thanks to Sugarspun Records for the tracks.

The Diggs - Trouble Everyday

The Band of Annuals

Enter the contest, yeah?
But really, you've got a whole lot of nothing to lose. Your chance is like...1/10. Don't dig that kind of music? Give it to your indie snob friend. We've all got one. They'll love it, I promise. One post down....check it, and enter!

"The Devil said 'RSVP'. You still coming?"

I've recently started my love affair with Salt Lake City's the Annuals. When I asked the band if I could share them with you, (and believe you me, I've been excited about it) they were all too happy to oblige. Raw, folky alt-country tunes with, on some tracks, dual vocals. It's right up my alley. I'll admit it, I more than just a bit impulsive. I only had to hear one song, and I knew I wanted the disc. Great purchase, and I suggest it to each and every one of you. If you're in the Salt Lake City area (and it looks like they've got some CA dates as well), make sure to check the Annuals out some time. If they ever roll around Minneapolis, I'll be there. I grabbed three tracks from the band's Repondez disc. Also, if you jet on over their myspace site, they've got a couple more tracks up for download.

Contest and the Lovely Feathers

Thanks to addVICE, we get to run our first contest here at CPMU. Remember young Swedish indie pop band Envelopes I posted last week? Well, we're giving away an Envelopes prize pack which includes the new disc Demon (definitely a good listen), as well as the single "Sister In Love" on 7" vinyl and some band badges. Very cool. Since its the first contest, I didn't want to make you work for it. Rather, I just want to get as much participation as I can. The more we get here, the better chances we have at doing some more really cool contest. You don't need a Blogger name to post comments, so EVERYONE who reads can enter. It doesn't take much. All you have to do is leave a comment with your e-mail address (which will be given to Vice unless you opt-out...but trust me, Vice is great, you'll want to hear from them) so I will be able to contact you if you win. I'll pick completely at random. So, just give it a shot. The prizes are great and it will help us get more contests at CPMU. I'm going to post the same Envelopes tracks in case you missed them or don't want to go searching for them again.

Envelopes - Sister In Love
Envelopes - Glue
Envelopes - Your Fight Is Over

"I really really really really like you."

After recieving the Lovely Feathers disc entitled Hind Hind Legs in the mail, it took me awhile to get into it. Upon listening to the first couple of tracks, I kind of just wrote them off as another manic, hurried alt-pop band. However, after digging a bit deeper, I realized that the Lovely Feathers were indeed able to break that mold and offer up something a little bit more personal and less frantic. I chose my 3 favorites tracks to share with you all, so I hope you can appreciate them like I do.

The Lovely Feathers - Ooh You Shocked Me!
The Lovely Feathers - Wrong Choice
The Lovely Feathers - I Really Like You

saturday business

**Don't forget to check back tomorrow. We've got the chance to do our first contest thanks to addVICE. It's a pretty good one too! Also, I think I'll put up the new Stills stuff I got a few days ago tomorrow. So, for those who don't get around to too many other blogs, here's your changce to hear a couple of the new tracks before the disc hits stores.**

The Working TitleOh how I looooove the Working Title. Remember when I posted the new "Crash" track awhile back? Well, we've since been sent a new stream from the band as well. However, I wanted to put "Crash" back up for those who hadn't heard it yet. Watch out for their debut disc this summer. I've been waiting for way too long, but I know its going to be a great one. You'll definitely be hearing more about them from me as their release date gets closer and closer. I just get really excited about this young band.

I've always got some blog business to take care of. And today we tackle some of it. A lot of the independent bands that have been sending me stuff are just incredibly nice, and so gracious. I can't help but just totally return the favor to some of the guys that have sent me some free discs. Midwestern folk, take note...these bands live right around the corner.

What can I say about Milwaukee, WI's Codebreaker. Dance, my friends, just dance. It's Saturday, so enjoy yourselves!

Codebreaker - 21st Century

Stephen Fretwell

"It really doesn't matter; I'm going to New York."

As promised, I'm back with some more Stephen Fretwell for you. I'm really impressed by this young guy who calls Manchester home. His music is cathartic; the majors got this one right. It's a nice break from some of the other stuff they've been throwing at us lately. It's just got this great organic, mellow, pleasant vibe to it. For fans of alt-country and relaxed folk music. Seriously though, it's really just for anyone who digs well-written, sincerely delivered tunes by a young kid who has got big things ahead of him. I really wanted to give this disc a proper review, but alas...I've been slammed with school this week. Forgive me? Thanks. And thanks as well to the nice people over at ICED Media who not only sent me a copy of his disc Magpie, but are also letting me post up some downloadable tracks as well. Right on.

Noise Pop Revisited

So to the reason I haven't posted in awhile: I was preoccupied this past week with a couple of projects, one of which being involved with Noise Pop. Noise Pop, if you don't know already, is a festival of sorts, that showcases amazing indie rock bands throughout the span of a week. The shows are spread out through venues in San Francisco (just think that it's in the fashion of SXSW). This year we got The Flaming Lips and Britt Daniels (of Spoon), along with countless other bands.

I volunteered to help contribute as a filmer for a couple of shows as a part of the Noise Pop documentary that's in the works. It was probably the best thing I've ever been a part of just for the experience and the people I met. Special thanks goes out to guys at Act Now Productions and all of the friendly folks (Jason, Natalie, Jen, Leslie, and Elise at Soma.FM) that spent time and chopped it up with me. Even though I found myself troubled filming most of the time and unsatisfied with the footage (I doubt any of it will be used to be honest), the time I spent out there was awesome.

Anyhow, I'll recap on what went down. Thursday was my first night out, and the show I attended had a great line-up. It was The Octopus Project, Aqueduct, and Rogue Wave at Bimbo's. I hadn't attended a show at Bimbo's since it's an 18+ venue, so I was in for a real treat. It really is a gorgeous setting. I didn't know what to expect from The Octopus Project; I'd heard a couple tracks off of their myspace previously, but they didn't leave much of a lasting impression on me. They were pretty fucking crazy on stage and had some pretty interesting equipment and effects (the use of the theremin intrigued me). Aqueduct was surprisingly entertaining. Though I wasn't initially drawn to their style of music, their live show was good nonetheless. Rogue Wave obviously played the best set of the night and I was excited as all hell when they played. Descended Like Vultures got some decent play when I first got it and watching them perform "California" as an encore was wonderful.

• The Octopus Project - "Adjustor"
• Rogue Wave - "California"

Friday was a fun night. I saw Cold War Kids, Street To Nowhere, Silversun Pickups, and Two Gallants. Cold War Kids opened pretty early and not too many people caught their show. I think it was a shame to put them first on the bill because they were one of my favorite acts of the night. More people need to pick up on this band and witness them live; they're solid, fun, and lead singer has great vocals. They'll be touring with Two Gallants in the next coming months, so be sure to check them out if they're near you. Speaking of Two Gallants, have I mentioned I absolutely love this band? You've heard the buzz, this recent Saddle-Creek signee blew me away.

• Cold War Kids - "Hospital Beds"
• Two Gallants - "Steady Rollin'"

Saturday night was the last show I'd make it out to, and it was going to be the highlight of my journey. I was really looking forward to this show because the two headliners, Xiu Xiu and The Velvet Teen, have been personal favorites of mine for awhile. The Velvet Teen played a bunch of new songs and let me tell you, their next release is going to be epic. Though my futile attempts to get them to play some old tunes (I kept chanting for them to play "Walking Backwards"), they're new material blindsided me. I don't really enjoy weird, obscure stuff. No, I didn't love the Antony And The Johnsons' release, and I'm not too fond of Sun0))) or any other droning noise band. I just can't get into it sometimes. Xiu Xiu is different for me though. Eerie vocals (as well as lyrics), chaotic programming and setup, just generally unorthodoxed. But there's something that lies outside of that, some beauty which Xiu Xiu seem to create that calls to me. The duo have honestly released some remarkable stuff and watching them live is something else. They've got the oddest equipment and the vibe they diffused was entrancing.

• The Velvet Teen - "Counting Backwards"
• The Velvet Teen - "No One Will Ever Love You"
• Xiu Xiu - "Crank Heart"
• Xiu Xiu - "Ale"

So there it is. I've been gone for a bit, but I'll try a little harder to update more. I've got a bunch of stuff I'd like to share. Noise Pop was lively, but exhausting. My legs are really worn out from all the traveling I did, but it was well worth it. I saw some of the best performances I have seen in a long time and I'm definitely going to do this again.

Oh, and I got interviewed for some newspaper or zine on Friday pertaining to Two Gallants. I never got the info or specifics on if or where it'd be published, so if you're a local and happen to come across that, let me know. Just look out for a photo of a kooky asian in a brown blazer.

• Spoon - "The Way We Get By"

My buddy Chris is too cool. Go and listen to some of his music.
Hit up "Lonely Charade" first. It's pretty killer.
