you in?

Does anybody want to help me with this? Like, someone who really really knows their stuff and would be down with posting every other day or so? More if you'd like even, that's just a minimum. It just gets hard to post everyday with school and work on top of that. Leave a comment with your e-mail address if you're interested...!

revisited...

I'm pretty busy this week, so sorry if I'm not completely attentive when it comes to posting. Therefore, I just decided to re-post my old Damnwells review. So for anyone new or who hasn't caught on yet...I'm in love with this band. Look for a new band possibly tomorrow or for sure on Wednesday. I'm really excited about them.

"You just steal my broken faith/And put it back together..."

Alt-Country and Brooklyn, NY? It has never made much sense until now. Thanks to the Damnwells and their 2003 release “Bastards of the Beat,” the Manhattan counterpart is no longer only a haven for hipsters and the like. Although the band would find itself in good company among bands like Wilco, Whiskeytown (who drummer Steven Terry himself had a short but sweet run with) and the Replacements, it can’t be said that Brooklyn and it’s scene hasn’t left it’s mark on the band. The coexistence of the age-old roots rock of the south and the ever so popular indie rock that seems to be particularly alive in the Northeast these says has met its match. “Bastards of the Beat” is living proof that genre blending isn’t always a bust. The technical guitar playing of lead guitarist Dave Chernis and the smoky yet subtly smooth vocal stylings of songwriter Alex Dezen lift the Damnwells to levels far beyond anything most bands are capable of creating on their debut album. Not only does “Bastards of the Beat” reveal the musical chops of the band and it’s success with experimentation on tracks like “Star/Fool” and “Sleepsinging,” but also shows the band’s ability to bring the music back down to earth on less-produced, srtipped down songs such “ I Will Keep The Bad Things From You,” and the album’s standout track “Texas.” Dezen’s simple, albeit incredibly involved lyrics, emote a passion so strong and sincere that it is a wonder how more haven’t caught on. As long as the Damnwells continue to offer up genuine and innovative rock and roll music, they will continue to have my complete devotion.

The Damnwells - Sleepsinging (the band's very good first single)
The Damnwells - Newborn History
The Damnwells - Star/Fool
The Damnwells - I Will Keep The Bad Things From You
(bringin' it back down to earth)
The Damnwells - Texas (my absolute favorite song)

*I have previously delegated U2 as the best band of all time. Quite true. Since U2 is in a complete league of their own, I'll state plainly and with no concerns that the Damnwells are my answer to that question dreaded by all music enthusiasts, "So who is your favorite band?"

Sunday...

Whether it takes a backseat or is employed as a song's only instrument, we all dig the sweet (or in some cases not so sweet...) sounds of the piano. I put up quite a variety of different tracks, some you've probably heard, and some I hope you haven't. Most of it is good stuff for a Sunday, I suppose. Make sure to check out the Bad Plus "cover" or Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." It's incredibly interesting.

The Fray - Hundred
The Bad Plus - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Jon McLaughlin - Anthem for American Teenagers
Dropping Daylight - Back to Nowhere
Something Corporate - She Paints Me Blue
John Legend - Ordinary People
Jamie Cullum - Catch the Sun
World Leader Pretend - Bang Theory

(As always, let me know if I you want me to feature a particular artist...)

Visit Mike over at Obscure Sound, a new blog.
He's got a Charlatans track up, so he scores points me with me.

Also, take a gander at Dance Hall Hips.
I think Jon started blogging around the time I did, right Jon?

Peter Adams

"When the iron city rusts and crumbles in the sea/Tiny dots and dying leaves will hover over me"

Peter Adams is 22. He is way ahead of the game. The stuff he is creating now is something you would expect to hear him play in a good five to ten years. The music in pretty intriguing, especially when you learn about how it came into existense. From Peter himself...

I record songs using guitar, violin, voice, sine waves and drum
samples. All my songs were produced in a bedroom studio that
is really just a computer, soundcard and microphone.

I dig the sine waves, Peter.

Thanks goes out to Geoff at over at The Ugly Couch for the heads up. Check it out, its cool pop culture zine that covers movies, music and has some original articles as well.

What do you guys think? Be on the lookout for this kid.

Sondre Lerche

"Days that are over will not continue to last, if you try to construct the past."

I'd love to be chummy with Sondre. He's just that cool. Since he has a new disc coming out next month and it seems as though his new song "Minor Details" has been posted at various other blogs, I thought I'd take it upon myself to familiarize some of you with the rest of his stuff. For those of you that don't already know, Sondre Lerche is a young Norwegian songwriter who has got a lot to offer up. He's got this classicism that is infused into each and every one of his songs which will hopefully become apparent to you upon listening. Sondre's main weapon of choice is his guitar, but the way he has employed the use of horns and keyboard effects (tasteful keyboard effects, mind you) make his second disc Two Way Monologue really worth delving into.

Red House Painters

"When they come around, somehow they feel up and you feel down."

This song is absolutely perfect.

It's all you'll need all day.

Red House Painters - Have You Forgotten

This is the version from the Vanilla Sky sountrack. The instrumentation (which is what makes this song so beautiful is starlky different than the original version found on Songs for a Blue Guitar. Mark Kozelek, you have my attention. Whos with me on this one?

Disco Ensemble

Two posts in one day? It'll be short. Just wanted you to get a quick taste of a band I've been into these past few days: Disco Ensemble. It's different than what you'll usuallty find here, but I'm all about variety. Anyways, they hail from Finland and I think they're even making an appearance at SXSW (don't hold me to that, I haven't officially checked that out yet).

Grogshow

"If it goes, baby, so will I"

I was actually quite impressed with something that landed in my mailbox this past week. After being pretty excited aobut some new sounds, I was much dismayed to find out that Grogshow is no longer a band. Quite a sad story. The band's songwriter Marc Kisting passed away in 1996. The music lives on however, thanks to some good people over at Future Appletree Music who decided to release the disc and give all proceeds to the Leukemia Research Foundation. If you were a fan of the alt-country mixes, I'd definitely give this a shot. It's got a bit of a melodic indie twist to it as well. I've fallen in love with the 2 tracks that I posted today and can't wait to hear the rest of the disc. The music is great, and the money is going to a great cause. What could be better? Help a brother out, right?

slammin sunday

Winter is too long and cold up here. I hope my skies start looking like this sometime soon!
by Zack Arias, a great photographer out of Atlanta

I'm not much for themes, I'm not even that big a fan on consistency. However, someone requested that I post "Crazy About You" by Whiskeytown, so I took the crazy thing and ran with it. The good thing is that you can get familiar with two new (possibly?) bands that I plan on featuring pretty soon here. So enjoy your Sunday, and enjoy these tracks.

Whiskeytown - Crazy About You (by request)
  • *I think we have a problem here. Pneumonia by Whiskeytown is one of my top five favorite albums of all time. This being said, you need to have it. Start with this disc, which was the band's last, and work your way down. Really, it's incredible. I know I'm not the only one that feels this way. Whiskeytown fans, speak up. Seriously.
Leaves - Crazy
On The Speakers - Dance Crazy

Anything else?
  • Visit Cable and Tweed , a great new blog
  • Due to server space, some of the mp3s in the archives (as of now only the first two posts) may be unavailable and the links dead. If you absolutely need to hear a song, email me and we can work something out.

the Mermaid Purse

"I want to hear music - life's sweet music"

Just a couple of songs for you to enjoy, no review to immerse yourself in... Just curious, are many of you even reading what I write? It's cool if you're not, I like doing it anyways. On to the music. I'm not quite sure how the band came up with their name, but I'm able to look past it. It's undeniable, the Mermaid Purse writes songs that are made for the radio. Nothing groundbreaking, but the songs are definitely appealing. While I'm at it, big props to Dallas. A lot of good bands seem to be coming out of the area at the moment. So get down with Dallas. Again, it's the weekend, and there is plenty to be done. So, I'll leave it at that.

the Age of Rockets

Thanks to Andrew and his rather insightful post over at emotionalpunk.com, I am able to bring to you the sounds of the Age of Rockets. It's Friday, and I'm not willing to write a lot. Therefore, you're going to have to deal with some less than stellar comparisons. The Age of Rockets makes mellow, electronic influenced indie pop songs. He (one man in the studio, but many on stage) is undoubtedly keen on the sounds of the Postal Service and the vocal stylings of Ben Gibbard. The songs could use a bit of polishing, but in due time I think the Age of Rockets has the ability to create something pretty interesting.

Age of Rockets - Pétales Aiment La Saleté
Age of Rockets - Insmileoutblood
Age of Rockets - Once, We Were Monsters

Living Better Electrically

"I try, love, but I don't say anything."

Life could be so much easier - with an electric guitar. Sometimes you just need a little pick me up, and Living Better Electrically is able to send one our way through their own brand of dynamic, spirited pop songs. These aren't the pop songs you take to the beach with you or play with the top down as you cruise down the highway. Rather, these songs have a bit more to offer. Perhaps I'm not completely clarifying myself, but the music always does. This band - the vocals, the lyrics, the instrumentation - is eccentric. However, an overly eccentric band can easily push a listener away. LBE finds a place in between. This balance makes them listenable while still being fresh. I think you'll like what you find. The following tracks are all available at the bands myspace, but due to myspace not being the most reliable place for downloading I decided to host them myself.

Living Better Electrically - Don't Say Anything
Living Better Electrically - Princess, Blue
Living Better Electrically - Sun Go Down

I love me some Ryan

Head over to An Aquarium Drunkard, because he really is the king of alt. country. All of his posts are great, usually with live sessions and some pretty rare tracks. Anyways, today he featured some tracks Ryan Adams recorded with a side project called Frieghtwhaler back in his Whiskeytown days. Highly recommended.

Mute Math

"There is always one addiction that cannot be controlled - you are mine."

Mute Math
. Their forte? Atmospheric, mid-tempo alt rock songs. Sounds like everything else you're hearing these days, right? It would seem so, but with Mute Math, this is far from the case. This band has found their niche and has perfected a sound that had since been unattainable in the alt-rock arena. I've got absolutely nothing bad to say about frontman Paul Meany's vocals, for they are just the icing on the cake. The instrumention and stunning use of effectual, engaging samples will be this band's claim to fame. They're a band from the future, in both sound and mind. (I may have taken that last one a bit too far, but I think you can imagine where I'm going with it...) These tracks are from the newly released self titled disc that only available online or at shows.

Mute Math - Noticed
Mute Math - You Are Mine (an absolutely beautiful track)

Alt. Country Mix Part II

Before we start, and because this band is completely unrelated, head over to rbally and grab the acoustic Art Brut tracks that Jennings posted awhile back. Like I said eariler, I'm a sucker for thick accents...

Originally, the post was going to have only 6 more songs. That was a bust; the list just kept growing. Again, I hope you dig the new artists as well as some old favorites (Whiskeytown, Replacements, Paul Westerberg).

Whiskeytown - Sit and Listen to the Rain
The Verdict - These Are Dreams
Fingers Cut Megamachine - Mousetrap
Cuff the Duke - Ballad of a Lonely Construction Worker
Matt Mays & El Torpedo - The Plan
Paul Westerberg - I Think I Love You (I think Cassidy has found himself a formidable opponent in Paul...?)
Griffin House - Tell Me A Lie
Spouse - Harry Crooker
The Exit - Soldier
The Replacements - Achin' To Be (some more Paul for you...)

Our Band Could Be Your Life, by Michael Azerrad

Check out this book if you're so inclined. Its got some great stories about the Replacements (as well as quite a few other bands) that are pretty interesting. It's an especially good read if your familiar with the Minneapolis/St. Paul area as well. Michael Azerrad, in my opinion at least, is a cool guy who has done a good job compiling this book. Props Michael, I dug it.

(You know the drill. If you want to hear more by any of the bands, let me know. Its so simple. I'd be glad to do a "feature" and post some more tracks.)

Alt. Country Mix Pt. I

My King of Alt. Country

Here it is, Part I. You were all expecting at least one Ryan track, right? You have them all anyways. I do have a Whiskeytown song on part II though, I couldn't resist. Some tracks you'll know (maybe?) and some you won't. I took some liberties in my alt-country classificiations, but more or less they all make sense. Enjoy, especially the Damnwells tune.
6 tracks today, and the number of tracks for tomorrow keeps growing...

High on Stress - You Have Conversations With Jesus
The Damnwells - Assholes (full version)
Bo Bedingfield & the Wydelles - New Years
Deadstring Brothers - 27 Hours
The Lonely Hearts - Love Comes Quickly
Patrick Park - Honest Skrew

Again, let me know if you want to offer up some more tracks by any of the artists...?

I'm a liar

EDIT: I noticed the links to the last 3 mp3's on this post were taken down. If you want them, email me and i'll get them to you.

Another Chris Strong photo. Seriously, he's great.

Ok, I'm a liar. The site doesn't get as much traffic as normal on Sunday, so I wanted to wait to put the so creatively titled "Alt. Country Mix Pt. 1" up tomorrow. Part II will be up on Tuesday. 6 songs each day. It'll be good.

1) I'm working on a new header for up top. It should look great. Maybe it will be up tonight or by tomorrow.
2) Look for a Mute Math post on Wednesday with new tracks; you guys will dig them.
3) Check out I Am Fuel, You Are Friends
4) I'm going to start reviewing discs for emotionalpunk.com...any suggestions?
5) MP3s: I know that is why you're here. So let's do it.

Morning Theft
- Always a Bridesmaid
Greater Good - There Is Love
Nizlopi - Fine Story (can't help myself, thick accents are my weakness)
University - Little Bit

I've been getting a lot of mail from bands, but since I don't have all the much time to do any writing today, I'm just going to do my best to put up a bunch of the links I've been getting.

-The Whigs (from Atlanta)
-The Melody Function (from Lexington, KY)
-The Arrogants
-Heypenny
-Ryan Smith
-The Diggs (from NYC)

*if you've emailed me and I've forgotten you, please do so again, I'm definitely not trying to disclude anyone.

Radiant

"It's like hiding under water/I can't stay here for long"

Their name actually does a good job of describing this band's sound. They are, in fact, quite radiant (in the least corny way possible). These boys from Dallas have got a good thing going on here. Radiant is able to produce a surprisingly epic sound. Yeah, epic is bold word to use, but this band holds to it. Moving, melodic instrumentation is intrinsic to this band's songwriting. Frontman Levi Smith's vocals soar over the polished, sophistacted songs and are an intregral part of this band's appeal. Any way you cut it, the songs are beautiful and Radiant should be more than just a favorite of Dallas and the surrounding area. My only complaint is that is has taken them eons to get their second release out. C'mon boys, I've been waiting. I included two songs from the band's forthcoming release, as well as some from their previous one called The Sound of Splitting Atoms.

Bono, let's get married

"Well if you think this is going to go to our heads, it already has"

I was going to get a new post ready, with a new band...but I couldn't resist. My boys went 5/5 last night at the Grammys. Damn, that's really something. I realize that most people either love or hate this band. As you can tell, I'm absolutely crazy about them. I simply couldn't resist this post. Be patient with me, and maybe I can get something else up later tonight as well. Other than that, bask in the glory that is U2. Let's recap. The boys took home:
  • Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal
  • Best Rock Song
  • Best Rock Album
  • Song of the Year
  • Album of the Year
Love it, the biggest awards of the night. Since it would be pretty lame of me to post "With or Without You" or "Beautiful Day" or anything in that vein, I thought I'd put up some live bootleg tracks, as well as some stuff the band did for the Million Dollar Hotel Soundtrack.

Bullet the Blue Sky
- (Zooropa Tour, Dublin, 1993)
In A Little While (w/ Brandon Flowers of the Killers)
Props to Dodge for this song, he posted it a while back. Worth having, cool track!
The Ground Beneath Her Feet (Million Dollar Hotel Soundtrack)
Into The Heart (great little track from the band's first disc Boy, for those that don't have it)
**Edit: head back over to Dodge's site to grab the band's "One" duet they did with Mary J. Blige last night!

I've heard of John Legend, but why hadn't I ever heard this song in my life before yesterday? I know, I'm out of it. I fell it love with it last night. Does that make me uncool?

How did your Grammy picks size up? Good night, bad night?

Pitty Sing

"And then it comes when it feels like we're in love/Just remember we're on drugs"

Plain and simple, Pitty Sing is a throwback to our favorite bands of the 80's. Comparisons aren't even necessary, you'll just understand upon listening. This band has got charm and wit that makes them easily likeable to even the most jaded of popular music critics. The band's pop sensibility teamed with their adeptness in regards to crafting mature, solid pop/rock songs is bound to carry them far. They've got this neo-new wave style pegged, and its bound to catch on with the masses (the radio) soon. Their debut, self-titled disc is a collection of songs so spellbinding and surreal that makes it simply too hard to pass up. I heard about these boys about a year ago when they got a brief mention by Chip. So, check him out here and here.

two posts today?

Head over to My Ex-Best Friend to download some tracks from Mute Math. Great band, great blog! I plan to feature some more of their new stuff when my disc arrives in the mail. You'll like them.

Policia!

"And you'll be wrapped around my finger..."

I'm trying something different. It's no doubt that the Police were one of the most influential bands of the past years 30, right? We all love them. Even if you don't think you do - you do. Since, at least I hope, that everyone already has the crucial hits like "So Lonely", "Every Breath You Take", and "Wrapped Around Your Finger" (one of my most favorite songs of all time), I decided to bring you some updated versions of the classics. Covers, as it be. I can't guarantee that you'll listen to them more than once, but I can get you to try. Keep an open mind, for no one can negate the unfailing charm of Sting and his boys. However, you may just end up enjoying yourself! 3 0f the 4 tracks were taken from a disc put out by the Militia Group, a burgeoning label out in Los Angeles.

Copeland- Every Breath You Take
Limbeck - So Lonely (my favorite track of the 4)
Brazil- Wrapped Around Your Finger
Watashi Wa- Message In A Bottle

Good post, bad post? Let me hear it. I want to know if I should do more stuff like this... Also, want to hear more from those bands? (Limbeck or Copeland)

Gledhill

"I drink because I hope that this world will look better when I wake..."

We're all on the same page; I'm fairly new to the band myself. What I do know about Gledhill, named after vocalist David Gledhill, is that they call Sheffield home and were fortunate enough to release a single through Fierce Panda Records. Fierce Panda, as many of you may know, is responsible for launching the careers of favorites like Coldplay and Keane, and continually released great music from some of UK's hottest new band. Gledhill is no exception. What I've heard so far is pretty appealing. The vocals are nice, the instrumentation is melodic and engaging, and the lyrics are relatively relatable. In essence, they're a good band that can only get better. Of course, there's always room development; Gledhill has already made some improvements. The three tracks I've provided you with are from their release with Fierce Panda Records, which was released last year. Now, the band is recording with MX3 Records and is about to release a new single called Roots, which is streaming both on their official site and myspace. Check my songs out - check the new songs out. The band's improvement is easy to recognize.

Again, Sunday rolls around and I leave you with five things to do!

1) Make sure to get yesterday's downloads from Iko; the post wasn't up too long. Like it? Let me know!
2) Download this mp3 of David Gray covering the Killers "Smile Like You Mean It." I think it was posted just about everywhere, so you may have it. If you don't - you must!
3) Check out rbally. Everything he posts is great, live shows especially. Right now he's got up a whole set from Ryan Adams & the Cardinals.
4) Good new band from the UK called The Upper Room. Join their mailing list and you get to download like 8 songs. Download one through me here - Black and White (acoustic)
5) Chillax, it's Sunday. Go to a movie, watch the Superbowl. That's on my agenda.

Iko

Sorry, things haven't been working all too well on here today, but here we go...

"These are all I have/Rich dreams that I can't afford"

These lads (and lady...) are from the UK. The sound you're about to hear coming out of your speakers is very atypical compared to the region's regular stock. In esssence, Iko is a breath of fresh air from the over-stylized and often over-produced music that has been so prevelant as of late. Kieran Scragg, the band's songwriter and vocalist, is on a mission to push out the now perfunctory sounds of bands like Franz Ferdinand or The Strokes (who I am by no means knocking, just making a point) in favor of timeless songs that can endure far longer than the radio's current trends. Kieran's light and seemingly effeminate vocals complement perfectly the band's sometimes, but not always, delicate acoustic arrangements. You can't help but be drawn in by this band who, on the verge of their European release date, has a lot to look forward to.

Jeremy Larson

"Feels like a far cry from all of the sunny days before..."

Jeremy Larson? Imagine if Coldplay, Keane and Ben Folds made mad passionate love and concieved a child... Wow. I'm totally kidding. Comparisons like that send me to my grave, I swear. I've seen a lot band bios as of late that employ that "technique." Don't. Not only does it make an ass out of the writer, but it makes an ass out the band as well. I don't know why they'd want to subject themselves to ridicule that usually ensues. Anyways, this is completely besides the point. Today is Jeremy's day. Take a look at the picture; Jeremy is a renaissance man. He is a technical and very educated musician. In fact, he's classicaly trained. Much like I raved about with Long-View, every one of Jeremy's songs has this inherent quality that just makes it sound BIG. To clarify, each track has this really anthemic, orchestral quality that brings Jeremy to a level high above what most of his contemporaries are capable of reaching. I know you'll love the tracks, so help a brother out and buy a disc. I can tell this album could easily slide it's way into being one of my favorite discs. The album truly is a breathtaking display of Larson's ability to create something remarkable.
